BitDefender 8 Spam Deny
protects your Inbox from incoming spam. In addition to the high-tech
Anti Spam filter, this product also includes the BitDefender
on-demand antivirus scanner.
Spam is a growing problem, both for
individuals and for organizations. It comes in a wide range of shapes and
sizes, and there’s a lot of it.
BitDefender 8 SpamDeny incorporates seven different proprietary modules to
keep your personal inbox spam-free:
- Heuristic filter
- Bayesian filter
- White list/Blacklist
- NEW Image Filter
- NEW URL filter
- NEW Charset filter
- NEW Explicit Content Filter
These techniques are used in conjunction by the BitDefender antispam filter,
to determine whether a certain piece of mail should make it to your inbox or
not.
Bitdefender Anti
Spam Filter Features:
Compatible with any e-mail client
BitDefender 8 SpamDeny works with all e-mail clients and can be configured
from the BitDefender 8 SpamDeny Console. Moreover it integrates directly
with Outlook and Outlook Express allowing a smooth interaction with the
antispam filter through an intuitive and easy-to-use interface.
Self-learning (Bayesian) filter
Train the Bayesian filter module based on your personal preferences.
Classify messages as "Spam" or "Ham", with a single click. The filter will
learn after just a few iterations, and you'll find yourself having to make
fewer and fewer decisions as time goes by. Each tag you assign will improve
the filter's accuracy. Your filter sensitivity settings can be as high, or
as low, as you like.
Heuristic filter
The heuristic filter performs set of tests on all the message components,
(i.e. not only the header but also the message body in either HTML or text
format), looking for words, phrases, links or other characteristics of spam.
NEW Image Filter
The Image Filter adds a spam score to e-mails that contain pictures which
appear often in spam e-mails. This filter relies on a constantly updated
database of such pictures.
NEW URL filter
The new URL filter blocks messages that contain illegitimate links from
reaching your regular inbox.
NEW Charset filter
The charset filter will block any e-mail written in "strange" characters -
like a lot of spam is.
NEW Explicit Content Filter
Block messages tagged [SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT:]
Friends list
List the people you wish to receive e-mail from no matter what it contains
or how it is worded. Import your friends' addresses directly from your
Personal Address Book or from Outlook folders into BitDefender AntiSpam, so
you'll never miss an e-mail from your friends again.
Spammers List
Don't you just hate it when you receive e-mail from countries you never even
heard about, much less have friends in? Blacklist the offending domains or
addresses to stop receiving their spam.
NEW Hassle-free
You'll only be notified of the arrival of legitimate messages. Spam will
collect silently in your "Junk" folder, to be examined or discarded at your
leisure.
NEW Informed Decisions
Configuration wizards are at hand to step you through all the procedures you
need to follow to secure your system. BitDefender will inform your
decisions, delivering informational, alert and status messages directly to
your desktop, in discreet info windows.
Antivirus Scanning and cleaning
Check a file or your entire system for viruses. 100% detection rate for all
viruses in circulation using the powerful scanning engines from BitDefender
Professional, certified by ICSA Labs, Checkmark and Virus Bulletin. The
antivirus module features automatic signature update, Quarantine zone,
Scheduler and reports.
Fast, Free Live! Updates
Intelligent update of antivirus protection, without user intervention. Live
Update can be performed from the network, over the Internet, directly or
through a Proxy Server. The product is able to repair itself if necessary,
by downloading the damaged or missing files from BitDefender servers.

Spam is a growing problem,
both for individuals and for organizations. It's not pretty, you wouldn't
want your kids to see it, it can get you fired (for wasting too much time or
from receiving porn in your office mail) and you can't stop people from
sending it. The next best to that is, obviously, to stop receiving it.
Unfortunately, spam comes in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and there's a
lot of it.
BitDefender Anti
Spam filter
incorporates three different proprietary
modules to keep your inbox spam-free: White list / Black list,
Heuristic filter and
Bayesian filter.
Every e-mail that comes from the Internet
is first checked with the
White list / Black list filter. If the
sender is on the White list the mail is moved directly to
your Inbox. If the sender is on the Black list
the mail is moved in the Spam folder (located in the
Delete directory).
If the sender of an e-mail is neither on
the white list nor on the blacklist, the heuristic filter will check the
mail. It will look for words, phrases, links or other characteristics of
spam. If the filter decides the e-mail is spam, it will be moved in the
Spam folder (located in the Delete directory).
Else, it will be passed on to the Bayesian filter.
The Bayesian filter module will further
analyze the message. If the message passes this filter it will be delivered
to your Inbox.
White list/Black
list
Most people communicate regularly to a
group of people or even receive messages from companies or organizations in
the same domain. By using friends or spammers lists, you can easily classify
which people you want to receive email from (friends) no matter what the
message contains, or which people you never want to hear from again
(spammers).
You can manage the friends/spammers list
from the BitDefender AntiSpam Console or from the BitDefender toolbar
(located in Outlook or Outlook Express).
We recommend that you add your friends’ names
and e-mail addresses to the
Friends list. BitDefender does not block
messages from those on the list; therefore, adding friends helps ensure that
legitimate messages get through.
Heuristic filter
The heuristic filter performs set of tests
on all the message components, (i.e. not only the header but also the
message body in either HTML or text format), looking for words, phrases,
links or other characteristics of spam.
Every time you perform an update new rules
will be added to the heuristic filter; this will help increase the
effectiveness of your AntiSpam engine.
Bayesian filter
The Bayesian filter module classifies
messages according to statistical information regarding the rate at which
specific words appear in messages classified spam as compared to those
declared non-spam (by you or by the heuristic filter).
This means, for example, if a certain
four-letter word is seen to appear more often in spam, it is natural to
assume there is an increased probability that the next incoming message
which includes it actually IS spam.
All relevant words within a message are
taken into account. By synthesizing the statistical information, the overall
probability for the whole message to be spam is computed.
This module presents another interesting
characteristic: it is trainable. It adapts quickly to the type of messages
received by a certain user, and stores information about all. To function
effectively, the filter must be trained, that is, to be presented with
samples of spam and legitimate messages, much like a hound is primed to
trace a certain scent. Sometimes the filter must be corrected, too –
prompted to adjust when it makes a wrong decision.
You correct the Bayesian module by using
the Is Spam and Not Spam
buttons from the BitDefender toolbar (located in Outlook or Outlook
Express).
The Bayesian filter can be configured to
function in automatic mode, too. It will rely on the decisions made by the
heuristic module to effect statistical analysis and will decide to activate
itself when it has gathered enough data.
These techniques presented above (White
list/Black list, Heuristic filter and Bayesian filter) are used in
conjunction by the BitDefender AntiSpam filter, to
determine whether a certain piece of mail should make it to your inbox or
not.
Steps to follow in
order to have a spam free inbox:
Add the addresses of the
people you absolutely need to receive mail from to the friends list
- You will always receive messages from your friends, regardless of
their content. You can add friends from the BitDefender AntiSpam Console
or from the BitDefender toolbar (located in Outlook or Outlook Express).
Train the Bayesian
filter - Every time you receive an email
that you consider as spam, but BitDefender didn’t tag it please select
it and from the BitDefender toolbar click the Is Spam
button. Future messages that fit the same patterns will be tagged as
spam.
Keep your BitDefender
up-to-date - Every time you perform an
update new rules will be added to the heuristic filter. This will help
increase the effectiveness of your AntiSpam
engine.
