These Internet Facts and Statistics........

Alarming Growth and numbers

NUA Internet Statistics and Surveys says there are over 506.6 million online worldwide.

The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 77 million kids will be online by 2005.  (Marino,Rob. "Terror in Cyberspace," 12-26-03)

20% of children have received a sexual solicitation online. (U.S. Dept. Of Justice 3/01)

The FBI estimates that of the over 45 million children online, under 18 that use the internet, fully 1/5 have received a sexual advance online.  (People Magazine 9-13-05)

The incidence of this crime, Internet luring, is increasing at a rate of 10% annually.  (City of Portland Bureau of Police)

Between 1988 and 2001, there was a 1500% increase in arrest for child related pornography,(Smith,Graeme.  "One third of Internet Child Porn Users are Also Abusers," 9-17-2004).

Watch out for email

A survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project conducted between January 13 and February 9, 2005, shows the following:

  • 28% of users with a personal email account say they are getting more spam than a year ago, while 22% say they are getting less.

  • 21% of users with a work email account say they are getting more spam than a year ago, while 16% say they are getting less.

  • 53% of email users say spam has made them less trusting of email, compared to 62% a year ago.

  • 22% of email users say that spam has reduced their overall use of email, compared to 29% a year ago.

  • 67% of email users say spam has made being online unpleasant or annoying, compared to 77% a year ago.

Overall, more than half of all internet users (52%) complain that spam is a big problem.

  • 47% received e-mail with links to pornographic Web sites. (SYMC: Research 6/9/03)

Unsolicited pornographic emails are considered to be the most annoying spam emails, followed by messages selling mortgages and loans, investments, and real estate.  (According to Harris Interactive Study 1/03/03.)

81% of teens say they have private email accounts, while only 68% of parents thought their teens had these accounts. (Penn et al.2000)

62% of children ages 7-18 received spam touting dating services. (SYMC: Research 6/9/03)

By the time they are 10 years old, 60% of children use the Internet.  That number grows to almost 80% for kids who are 16.  (USAToday.com  10/29/03, referencing Education Department Analysis performed 9/2001)

Kids and teenagers between the ages of 12-17, account for nearly 20% of the active online population, equivalent to 20 million user in total. (Nielson NetRatings Aug. 13th, 2002.)

From 1996 to 2002 there was a nearly 2000% increase in the number of online child pornography and exploitation cases investigated by the FBI, from 113 reports in 1997 to 2,360 cases reported in 2002. (People Magazine 9-15-03)

There is more going on in chatrooms than you are aware!

Some 57% of parents worry that strangers will contact their children online.  These worries are well grounded.  Close to 60% of teens have received an instant message or email from a stranger and 50% report emailing or instan messaging with someone they have not met before.  Despite this, teens themselves are not particularly worried about strangers online: 52% of online teens say they do not worry at all about being contacted online and only 23% express any notable level of concern. (Pew Internet & American Life)

Thirty percent of teenage girls polled by the Girl Scout Research Institute, said they had been sexually harassed in a chatroom.  Only 7 percent, however, told their mothers or fathers about the harassment, as they were worried that their parents would ban them from going online.  (Girl Scout Research Institute 2002)

86% of the girls polled said they could chat online without their parents' knowledge, 57% could read their parents e-mail, and 54% could conduct a cyber relationship. (Girl Scout Research Institute 2002)

Strangers and Porn are out there.

More than half of the teens reported corresponding with strangers, and only 30% of parents thought their teens sent or received emal from a stranger.  (Penn et al.2000)

When the respondents were asked how they know what is safe onlinebehavior, 84% said they followed their own common sense.  51% said they learned from their parents, and 4% said "nothing is that bad online because it's not really real."  (Girl Scout Research Institute 2002)

40% of parents are worried that the Internet leads young people to engage in dangerous or harmful activities, and 40% have had arguments with their children about the Internet.  (Pew Internet & American Life)

About 90% of young people, ages 5-17 use computers and 59% of them use the Internet.  (National Center for Education Statistics report: Computer and Internet Use by Children and Adolscents 2001).

When the U.S. Postal invetigated all 3000 people, it had arrested since 1997 on suspicion of possessing child porn, more than one third were also found to be guilty of child abuse. (Smith,Graeme.  "One third of Internet Child Porn Users are Also Abusers," 9-17-2004).
